For staff

Ms Janet Morley is to preach the University Sermon on Sunday, 15 October, in the University Church, Great St Mary's, at 11.15 a.m on the subject of 'Whatsoever things are true...whatsoever things are lovely...think on these things'?

Janet Morley read English at New Hall, now Murray Edwards College and pursued biblical studies at King's College London, as well as obtaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Her professional life has focused on adult religious education, at Christian Aid and in the Methodist Church, both as part of the Methodist Connexional Team, providing training and resources to support the mission of local churches, circuits and districts and in relation to Wesley House, where she has served as a formational tutor and as the first editor of its journal, Holiness.

Caring responsibilities have also shaped her life, whether raising children, caring for grandchildren, or latterly accompanying very elderly relatives through the journey of dementia.

Her links with Methodism notwithstanding, Janet Morley is a lifelong member of the Church of England. She is the author of several books of creative liturgy, including All Desires Known (1992), Bread of Tomorrow: Praying with the World's Poor (1992) and was the editor of Bread of Tomorrow: Prayers for the Church Year (1996). Recent publications, such as The Heart's Time - A Poem a Day for Lent and Easter (2011) Haphazard by Starlight: A Poem a Day from Advent to Epiphany (2013) and Our Last Awakening (2016) explore the power of poetry to resource the spiritual life: through Lent and Advent, and in the face of death.

The Choir of Corpus Christi College will sing at the Sermon.

All are welcome and there will be a wine-reception in Michaelhouse afterwards for those present. Members of the University attending should wear their gowns.
