For staff

Today marks the beginning of Switch Off Week and the annual UAS competition.

This is your opportunity to help reduce the University’s energy consumption, save electricity, reduce our collective carbon footprint and pledge to change your behaviour so that these savings become permanent

Jonathan Nicholls, Registrar of the University

The week aims to encourage staff to cut energy use and save money by turning off lights and equipment when they are not needed.
Jonathan Nicholls, the University Registrary, said: “This is your opportunity to help reduce the University’s energy consumption, save electricity, reduce our collective carbon footprint and pledge to change your behaviour so that these savings become permanent.
"There are many ways to be involved and many of them are fun and informative.
"I want all of them also to have a serious and lasting influence."
To add some competitive interest for us in the UAS, during the Week, there will be competition between the Old Schools, Greenwich House, and Kenmare House/BGB to see which group of colleagues have saved the most electricity.
This will be similar to the competition we ran in last year’s Switch Off Week and again we have devised a cunning formula to ensure that we can compare usage fairly.
The prize will be cakes for the winners. Last year, the Old Schools won.
Will those colleagues repeat their success or can Greenwich House or Kenmare House triumph?”
The week also features other competitions, challenges, prizes and tips. For more information on Switch Off Week, go to: http://www.environment.admin.cam.ac.uk/switch-off-week.
