University Sermon to be held on 'Education Sunday'.
Janet Scott, of Murray Edwards and Homerton Colleges and Hughes Hall, will preach the University Sermon in Great St Mary's, the University Church, at 11.15 a.m. on Sunday, 1 February.
Scott was formerly Head of Religious Studies and Director of Studies in Religious Studies and Education at Homerton College and also served as Praelector for the College for 18 years, presenting their graduands in the Senate House for admission to their degrees.
She read Classics and Theology at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College) and completed a PGCE at Hughes Hall. She has also graduated BA in Mathematics and Education Studies in the Open University and MTh at King's College, London. After a period as a schoolteacher and then trainer of teachers for Religious Education, she returned to Cambridge and to Homerton in 1989.
A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) since her teens, she has served as Clerk of the Society's national Meeting for Sufferings and was a member of the committee revising 'Quaker Faith and Practice'.
She gave the 1980 Swarthmore Lecture to London (now Britain) Yearly Meeting, later published as 'What canst thou say? Towards a Quaker Theology' and also the public lecture at Ireland Yearly Meeting in 2000, entitled 'Hope'.
Active in ecumenical work on behalf of Friends worldwide, Scott has served on the World Council of Churches (WCC) Faith and Order Plenary Commission and represents Friends at the WCC Central Committee.
She regularly teaches at Woodbrooke, the Quaker study centre in Birmingham and her most recent publication is a chapter, 'Quakers, Other Churches and Other Faiths', in Angell and Dandelion(eds), the Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies, OUP, 2013.
Scott is a Trustee of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and a Trustee and former Moderator of Churches Together in England.
She served for twenty years on the Religious Education Council of England and Wales and is the Deputy Chair of the Cambridgeshire Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education.
The subject of the University Sermon, 'Education for Good News', mirrors the fact that 1 February 2015 is designated 'Education Sunday' by Churches Together in England.
All are welcome and there will be a wine reception in Michaelhouse afterwards for those present.
Members of the University attending should wear their gowns.
