Car-share scheme can save fuel, cut costs and reduce parking problems

The University has launched a new car-sharing website where staff can register their journey and find those travelling in the same direction.

The Cambridge University car-share scheme enables organised car-sharing by connecting people travelling in the same direction so they can arrange to travel together and share the costs.

It can make a huge difference. During rush hour in the UK there are around 38 million empty car seats; the equivalent of nearly half a million empty buses. If half of UK motorists received a lift one day a week, congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10% and traffic jams by 20 per cent.

You don’t even need a car to car-share as many people are happy to offer lifts in exchange for sharing the fuel costs. On the Cambridge University Liftshare network you can register your journey as “seeking a lift”. If you cycle or walk to work, it’s always good to find a car-share partner just in case one day you need a lift.

Registration is easy and is free. Visit www.camuni.liftshare.com, click ‘Join now’ and follow the steps.

The benefits of using the service include:

• Reduces the costs of travelling

• Undercuts the cost of nearly all forms of transport

• Cuts congestion and pollution

• Reduces parking problems

• Is a way to network, meet colleagues and make friends.

Register a regular journey between now and the 5 June to be entered into a prize draw to be in with a chance of winning wine and chocolates.
