Robin Franklin has been appointed Professor of Stem Cell Medicine with effect from 1st January 2014. Professor Franklin, who is currently in the Veterinary School in West Cambridge, will be moving to the School of Clinical Medicine on the Biomedical Campus as part of the new professorship.
A key part of his role will be as Head of Translational Science for the Wellcome Trust-MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, with responsibility for promoting and coordinating research aimed at turning scientific discoveries into medical applications.
Professor Franklin’s research is largely focused on the biology of remyelination and investigating strategies by which this important regenerative process may be enhanced therapeutically for the treatment of people with demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
Austin Smith, Director of the Stem Cell Institute and Medical Research Council Professor, said: “Robin Franklin’s research is a great example of how to go from a fundamental discovery in regenerative biology to a potential treatment for a disabling disease. I am looking forward greatly to working with Robin to establish the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute as a world-leader, not only in understanding stem cells but also in turning that knowledge into medical applications.”
