For staff

Professor Nigel Slater and Professor Chris Abell started their terms of office last week, completing the University’s team of Pro-Vice-Chancellors.

Professor Slater began his term as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Regional Affairs on Friday. He is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, and was previously Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

He is joined by Professor Abell, the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research. Professor Abell is a Professor of Biological Chemistry, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Academy of Medical Sciences. From 2013 to 2015, he was the University’s first Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, set up to deal with issues relating to the postdoctoral community at Cambridge.

They join the university’s three existing Pro-Vice-Chancellors. As of 1 January 2016, the team comprises:

  • Professor Duncan Maskell, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor
  • Professor Chris Abell, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research
  • Professor Eilis Ferran, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Institutional and International Relations
  • Professor Nigel Slater, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Regional Affairs
  • Professor Graham Virgo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education

The role of the Pro-Vice-Chancellors is to take forward strategy and policy development and to support the Vice-Chancellor in providing institutional leadership for the University. Each post covers areas of strategic importance to the University and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors work closely with the Heads of Schools and senior professional administrators.

More information about the team can be found on the Vice Chancellor’s Office website.
