The Greater Cambridge City Deal is inviting the public to comment on its plans to improve travel in and around the city.

It is seeking views on two sets of proposals – one focusing on improving access into Cambridge from the south and the other aimed at reducing congestion in the city centre.

A formal consultation is taking place over the first set of proposals, which looks at improving travel along the A1307, creating better connections between Granta Park, the Babraham Research Campus and the University’s Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The plans include bus-only roads, safer cycle routes and a new Park and Ride service on the A11. A leaflet outlining the plans is available here and an online consultation survey can be found on the City Deal website. The deadline for responses in Monday, 1 August.

The second set of proposals centres on a package of eight measures aimed at reducing traffic in the city centre and encouraging the use of sustainable travel options. Initially the City Deal board is looking for feedback to help shape the details of their plans, which will be considered in January 2017, with consultations on certain elements of the package likely to take place next year.

The measures include:

  • More reliable bus services and further investment in Park and Ride services
  • Safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Improved public spaces
  • Removing traffic from key bus routes at the busiest times of day
  • A workplace parking levy
  • On-street parking controls to improve the availability of spaces for residents
  • The use of smart technology to give greater priority at junctions to buses, cyclists and pedestrians
  • Travel planning to help people, businesses, schools and other organisations adapt to any changes

Feedback is being collected through an online survey, which closes on Monday, 10 October, and is available here.

Members of the City Deal project team will be available to discuss the plans at a number of events throughout the city in the coming months. A full list of dates and further details of each of the measures can be found on the City Deal website

The Greater Cambridge City Deal is a partnership between central government, council leaders, businesses and the University of Cambridge, and aims to reduce infrastructure barriers to future economic growth in the Greater Cambridge area.
