For staff

The boat race must take place 'behind closed doors' this year due to national restrictions.

Following the disappointing cancellation of the races last year, we are delighted that the 2021 Boat Race is taking place this Sunday, 4 April. The event marks the 75th Women’s Race and 166th Men’s Race.

As we’re still in a period of national restrictions, the Boat Race can only take place this year in a unique format: 'behind closed doors', away from its usual location on the Thames. The Gemini Boat Race 2021 will be taking place on the River Great Ouse at Ely.

To make the event COVID-secure, there will be no access for spectators. For the safety of the athletes, their support teams and the local community, we ask those of you who wish to enjoy the event to stay at home and watch it live on the BBC.

Live coverage of the build-up and the Races will be on BBC One, iPlayer and the BBC Sport website/app from 3pm BST. The Women’s Race starts at 3.50pm BST and the Men’s Race at 4.50pm BST. Further information can be found on the Boat Race Company's website.
