Professor David Rubinsztein (CIMR) has been awarded the Biochemical Society Thudichum Medal for his outstanding contributions to the field of neuroscience. The award, named after a pioneer of brain chemistry research, recognises the advances made by David and his group in using autophagy upregulation as a possible therapeutic strategy in neurodegenerative diseases and identifying drugs and novel pathways that may be exploited for this objective. The award also notes his key contributions in uncovering the relevance of autophagy defects as a disease mechanism and the basic cell biology of this important catabolic process.
