Professor David Rubinsztein (Cambridge Institute for Medical Research) has been awarded the ninth annual 2017 Roger de Spoelberch prize for his contributions to neurodegeneration research.

The objective of this Foundation’s prize is the funding and promotion of research and assistance in the area of neurodegenerative diseases in general and of certain psychiatric disorders seriously altering human behaviour.

This year, the committee emphasized the many insights that Rubinsztein’s research has made into the role of autophagy, a cellular recycling process, in neurodegeneration and its relevance for potential therapeutic strategies.

Professor Rubinszstein said: “I am extremely grateful to the Roger de Spoelberch Foundation for this great honour. This award will provide tremendous encouragement and significant support for me and my lab’s future efforts. Of course, this prize is a sign of recognition for my coworkers in the lab over the years. I have been truly fortunate to have worked with wonderful people, who are excellent scientists and collaborators. I am very grateful to them for making the lab a place I look forward to coming to each day.”
