For staff

Remembrance Sunday will be marked with events across collegiate Cambridge this year, the centenary of the end of the First World War.

All College Chapels will be holding Remembrance Sunday services on Sunday, 11 November (times vary, please check College websites for details).

For the Clare College service, 199 unique orders of service will be printed, each telling the story of a different soldier, who either did not take up their place at Clare or left midway through or after their studies, and were killed in action.

Newnham College has digitised a 170-page handwritten book recording the work done by more than 700 Newnham women during the First World War, which will be launched at an event at the College on 5 November.

At Great St Mary’s, the University Church, the address will be given by General The Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC, former Chief of the General Staff.

Cambridge Royal British Legion, in association with King’s College, is marking the occasion with a special Remembrance Day service at 10.00 at the Cambridge War Memorial on Hills Road. The service will be attended by a delegation from Heidelberg, the German city which has been twinned with Cambridge since soon after the Second World War.

The service will be transmitted live on local radio and recorded for subsequent transmission by both the BBC and ITV. The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, will be performing at the service, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope, will lay a wreath on behalf of the University.

“11th November 2018 is a significant occasion for the University and the City because it marks - to the minute - the implementation of the Armistice which brought the Great War to its conclusion,” said Padre Jonathan Knight from the Cambridge Royal British Legion (RBL), who will officiate the service at the War Memorial. “This was an unhappy period in which many from the town and the gown died prematurely for a cause which many of them perhaps never understood completely.

“We at Cambridge RBL think this will be a fitting tribute to the many who died and that the opportunity to hold this formal celebration is unrepeatable.”
