Dr Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Chief Executive Officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will speak on Fear or Facts? The Case for Facts, in the Senate-House on Monday, 12 June 2017.

The Rede Lectures are the oldest series of named lectures in the University, first endowed by the executors of Sir Robert Rede in 1524. Previous lecturers have included John Ruskin, Thomas Henry Huxley and CP Snow. More recently, Wen Jiabao (2009), Harold Varmus (2011) and Drew Gilpin Faust (2015) have spoken.

Sue Desmond-Hellmann joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2014 from the University of California at San Francisco, where she was Chancellor and Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor. A physician, scientist and philanthropist, she trained as an oncologist and studied at the Universities of Nevada, Reno and California, Berkeley.

Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, Dr Desmond-Hellmann formerly spent 14 years with Genentech, developing, among other pharmaceuticals, two of the first gene-targeted cancer therapies. Experiences in Africa have led her to be a major driver of developments to eradicate disease, poverty and inequality ,and to empower people, particularly women and girls.

The lecture will be given in the Senate-House at 5.30pm. All are welcome and it is not necessary to make reservations. Senior members of the University attending are requested to wear their gowns.
