The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) has honoured Professor Ron Martin (Department of Geography) with their Victoria Medal, one of their most prestigious awards.

Professor Martin has been awarded the Victoria Medal in recognition of his extraordinary achievement in geographical research and public engagement.

Professor Martin said:

"I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive this award. It is extremely gratifying personally that my work in economic geography has been recognised in this way. But academic work is never the result of lone effort, and in receiving this award I want to acknowledge the invaluable inspiration and stimulation I have enjoyed from those close colleagues with whom I’ve collaborated and published over the years.  I also see the award as testifying to the key importance of economic geography more widely, both for its academic contribution and its relevance for public policy."

The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)’s prestigious medals and awards recognise excellence in geographical research and fieldwork, teaching and public engagement. They are presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding achievements.

Recipients join a prestigious list that includes Sir Alexander Burnes, David Livingstone, Alfred Russel Wallace, Captain R. Scott and more recently Professor Peter Haggett, Dr Sylvia Earle, Professor Diana Liverman, Sir Crispin Tickell and Sir David Attenborough.

Nicholas Crane, President of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), said:

“Over four decades, Ron’s work has shaped the way that the crucial economic and urban agendas of the moment are theorised and responded to in policy circles. His research has fundamentally changed the way we think about the role of cities and regions in economic growth and prosperity. I am delighted that he has been awarded the Victoria Medal.”

The award will be presented at a ceremony on Monday 6 June 2016.
